Message from the Directors:
Thank you for wanting to learn more about the directors’ cut of our narrative music video film, 1.21 Gigawatts! Creating this video has been a lifelong dream come true for us. As first-time directors, we’re incredibly excited for the opportunity to share our work with an amazing audience we believe would appreciate the joy and fun we had making this video.
As big Back to the Future fans, we did our best to honor Zemeckis’ work and pay tribute to the original trilogy by recreating iconic scenes. Our crew is entirely local in LA, so we had a blast shooting exteriors in the original filming locations such as Marty’s house in Arleta, Doc’s 1955 house in Pasadena, and the Lone Pine Mall in Puente Hills where Marty first sees the time machine.
I like to think it’s not obvious in the final result, but the secret is this was a no-budget passion project and labor of love. We made most of the props and costumes ourselves while the entire crew brought their own gear and volunteered their time and expertise. For Marty and Doc’s interiors, we used our bedroom and a friend’s living room. When we didn’t have an editor available, we learned how to edit in Premiere and Resolve (and realized that we absolutely love editing).
Most importantly, we’re incredibly proud of all elements of our project, from our production, prop, and costume design to our cinematography, VFX, and editing, so we have multiple in-depth BTS breakdown articles of our production available here (and more coming soon!)
After you watch our short film, we’d love to hear what you think! Please reach out or tag us via social media:
